Flame Resistant (FR) Safety Vests — NFPA 70E & Arc Rated Hi-Vis
Flame resistant safety vests combine high-visibility compliance with certified arc flash and flash fire protection — eliminating the need to choose between being seen and being safe. Built from arc-rated modacrylic, modacrylic/aramid blends, and FR-treated cotton mesh fabrics, these vests self-extinguish on contact with a flame source and will not melt, drip, or contribute to burn injury in the event of an arc flash or flash fire. They are a core compliance garment for workers operating under NFPA 70E (arc flash) and NFPA 2112 (flash fire) requirements who also need ANSI high-visibility certification.
FR safety vests are widely used by electricians and electrical maintenance workers who perform energized tasks near roadways or in high-traffic plant environments, utility and power line workers requiring both arc flash protection and roadway visibility, and oil and gas field personnel on sites where flash fire exposure and high-visibility compliance coincide. Many styles in our collection are certified to ANSI/ISEA 107-2015 Class 2 or Class 3 and meet ASTM F1506 and NFPA 70E simultaneously.
Arc ratings in this category typically range from 5.5 to 9 cal/cm² (NFPA 70E PPE Category 1–2), and vests are available in solid and mesh construction, ANSI yellow/green and ANSI orange, with FR reflective tape in suspender and 360° band patterns. Brands include OccuNomix, NSA (National Safety Apparel), and Portwest — all manufactured with FR thread, FR binding, and FR hook-and-loop closures to ensure every component of the garment meets the standard, not just the shell fabric.
Important: a vest alone does not satisfy full NFPA 70E body coverage requirements. Pair your FR vest with compliant FR shirts and FR pants for a complete arc-rated system. For workers needing arc flash protection without a visibility requirement, see our full FR clothing collection.

FR Safety Vests — Frequently Asked Questions
A standard hi-vis safety vest meets ANSI/ISEA 107 visibility requirements but offers no thermal protection. An FR safety vest does both — it is manufactured from arc-rated, flame resistant fabrics (typically modacrylic or modacrylic/aramid blends) that self-extinguish and resist ignition, and it is tested to ASTM F1506 and/or NFPA 2112 in addition to ANSI visibility standards. Every component — shell fabric, reflective tape, thread, binding, and closures — must be flame resistant for a vest to carry a valid FR/arc-rated certification.
A vest alone does not satisfy NFPA 70E requirements, which mandate coverage of all potentially exposed skin. A vest must be worn as part of a compliant arc-rated system — over an arc-rated FR shirt, with arc-rated FR pants. The vest's individual arc rating contributes to the overall system's protection, but every layer must be non-melting and the complete outfit must cover arms, legs, and torso. Confirm your full system's arc rating meets the required PPE category for your task.
Our FR vest collection includes ANSI/ISEA 107-2015 Class 2 (required for most roadway and construction work) and Class 3 options (required for higher-speed roadways and more hazardous conditions). We also carry non-ANSI FR electrician vests for workers who need arc flash protection in plant environments where roadway visibility is not required. Use the ANSI Certified filter to sort by class.
FR safety vests in this category are generally rated between 5.5 and 9 cal/cm², placing them in NFPA 70E PPE Category 1 (4+ cal/cm²) to Category 2 (8+ cal/cm²) range. They are not designed for high-energy arc flash environments requiring CAT 3 or CAT 4 protection. For higher-energy tasks, a full arc flash suit is required. Always verify the arc rating on the individual product before purchasing.
Yes. FR safety vests can be machine washed following the garment care label — typically warm water, no bleach, no fabric softener. The reflective tape used on certified FR vests is itself flame resistant and rated to maintain visibility performance through a specified number of wash cycles (check the individual product's certification documentation). Damaged or missing reflective tape compromises the vest's ANSI certification and should be replaced or the vest retired.
FR safety vests are most commonly required in electrical utility (overhead and underground line workers performing energized work near roadways), oil and gas extraction and transportation, petrochemical and refinery operations, road construction and traffic control near electrical infrastructure, and industrial plant environments where NFPA 70E compliance is required alongside site-specific hi-vis programs.
