FR Parkas - Arc-Rated Cold-Weather Protection
FR parkas extend below the hip for substantially more body coverage than an FR bomber jacket, the same coverage tradeoff seen in standard hi-vis outerwear, applied here to flame-resistant cold-weather protection. They're the preferred outer layer for utility, oil and gas, and electrical workers who spend extended periods stationary or in low-activity roles outdoors during cold weather — substation work, line maintenance, and extended outdoor monitoring — where the additional coverage at the hips and thighs meaningfully reduces heat loss compared to a shorter jacket.

NFPA 70E governs electric arc flash hazard protection, a different ignition mechanism involving an electrical fault that produces extreme heat and light rather than a fuel-driven fire. Westex UltraSoft® cotton-blend parkas (Big Bill M300US7 and M305US7) prioritize FR performance and warmth over full waterproofing, since the inherent FR cotton/nylon blend doesn't carry the same waterproof coating as treated polyester. If sustained rain or wet conditions are a primary concern alongside FR requirements, confirm waterproof rating on the specific product page rather than assuming all FR parkas perform equally in wet weather.
