NASCO FR Rain Gear - - NASCO introduced the first arc resistant FR rain gear in 1987 and has become the top provider for North America’s electric utility work force. NASCO's Petrolite line is specifically designed for the gas utility, petroleum and chemical industries and has become the gold standard for high quality, high visibility FR rain gear in the industry.

NFPA 2112 is the standard regarding flame resistant clothing for protection of industrial workers against flash fire hazards. This standard provides requirements for certification, performance and design requirements as well as test methods for flame-resistant clothing that is used in locations at risk from flash fires. The NFPA 2113 standard for the proper care and use of flame resistant clothing and help specify design, performance, certification requirements and testing methods for flame resistant clothing in locations where the possibility of flash fires may exist.

NFPA® 2113 also provides helpful information regarding specification and selection for flame resistant clothing. NFPA 70E standard is designed to help minimize burns from electrical arc hazards within a work place environment and does not cover electric and communication utility line construction. The utility industry does not use NFPA standards as a guideline for electrical safety, it goes by the IEEE standard C2. The NFPA and NECS (IEEE) are independent in the development of safety standards for flame resistant clothing and other arc related PPE. Both NECS and NFPA standards are accepted by OSHA.

The utility construction industry is only required to meet NFPA 70E for warehouses and office locations, not utility construction. The utility industry is required to meet similar NECS requirements for their generation, distribution and transmission facilities. ASTM F1506 covers design characteristics and associated test methods that relate specifically to the flame resistance of textile materials used in the manufacturing of flame resistant clothing for basic protection levels for occupational clothing worn by electrical workers who are in danger of being exposed to momentary arc and related thermal hazards such as exposure to open flame and radiant heat.
