FR Hi Vis
Flame Resistant High Visibility Clothing - Dual-Certified FR & ANSI
Wearing a standard ANSI hi-vis vest over an FR shirt does not satisfy NFPA 70E arc flash requirements. A non-FR high-visibility vest made from polyester or nylon is a melt hazard in an arc flash environment — it will ignite or melt and worsen burn injuries regardless of what certified FR clothing is worn underneath. For workers who need both high-visibility compliance and arc flash or flash fire protection simultaneously, the solution is dual-certified FR hi-vis clothing: a single garment that carries both NFPA 70E (arc flash) or NFPA 2112 (flash fire) certification and ANSI/ISEA 107-2015 Class 2 or Class 3 high-visibility certification.
These garments are used by workers who face both hazards simultaneously: utility linemen and power line workers performing energized work near roadways or in traffic; electric utility and gas company field crews required to maintain arc flash PPE compliance while working near moving equipment; oil and gas and petrochemical workers on sites near active roadways or rail; and road construction electrical workers performing energized panel or transformer work in traffic control zones.
Our FR hi-vis collection includes the full range of dual-certified garment types: FR hi-vis shirts (long-sleeve button-down and t-shirt styles, ANSI Class 2 and 3, arc ratings 8–12 cal/cm²); FR hi-vis safety vests (ANSI Class 2 and 3, arc ratings 5.5–9 cal/cm²); FR hi-vis jackets and parkas (ANSI Class 3, arc ratings 8.5–35+ cal/cm²); FR hi-vis coveralls (ANSI Class 2, dual NFPA 70E and NFPA 2112); and FR hi-vis hoodies (ANSI Class 3, arc rated CAT 2). All garments use ANSI-compliant fluorescent yellow-green or orange backgrounds with FR reflective tape — itself certified non-melting — sewn with Nomex® thread on FR binding for full compliance of every component.
Brands in this collection include OccuNomix, Flamesafe, Portwest, NASCO, Neese Industries, and Dragonwear. Use the filters on this page to sort by ANSI class, arc rating, garment type, and brand. For arc flash protection without a visibility requirement, see the full FR clothing collection. For non-arc-rated ANSI hi-vis workwear, see our High Visibility Clothing department.

FR Hi-Vis Clothing — Frequently Asked Questions
No. A standard ANSI hi-vis vest made from polyester or nylon mesh violates NFPA 70E Article 130.7, which requires every layer worn in an arc flash environment to be non-melting. Polyester and nylon melt at arc flash temperatures and bond to skin, causing severe additional burn injury even when the FR clothing underneath is fully compliant. Wearing a non-FR hi-vis vest over an arc-rated FR shirt does not satisfy NFPA 70E — it creates a hazard.
The compliant solution is a dual-certified FR hi-vis garment that carries both an arc rating (ATPV in cal/cm² from ASTM F1959 testing) and an ANSI Class 2 or Class 3 high-visibility certification from ANSI/ISEA 107-2015 testing — in a single garment manufactured from non-melting, FR-compliant materials throughout.
A dual-certified FR hi-vis garment simultaneously meets two independent sets of safety standards:
- FR/Arc Flash certification: tested to ASTM F1506 and assigned an arc rating per ASTM F1959 (ATPV or EBT in cal/cm²), with compliance to NFPA 70E and/or NFPA 2112. The entire garment — shell fabric, reflective tape, thread, binding, and closures — must be non-melting and FR-compliant.
- ANSI/ISEA 107-2015 certification: verified fluorescent background color and retroreflective tape area meeting Class 2 (75 sq in min background, 201 sq in min reflective) or Class 3 (larger minimum areas) requirements. Reflective tape on FR hi-vis garments must itself be flame-resistant or non-melting to maintain both certifications.
Dual certification means both sets of testing have been completed and documented on the garment's certification label. Verify both certifications are listed before purchase.
ANSI Class 2 is required for most roadway work environments — workers exposed to traffic speeds above 25 mph but in generally controlled conditions, such as construction zones with flagging, parking lot work, and utility crews working adjacent to roads. Minimum background material and reflective tape area requirements are lower than Class 3.
ANSI Class 3 is required for higher-risk, higher-speed roadway environments — highway construction, expressway maintenance, workers near traffic exceeding 50 mph, and any task requiring full 360° visibility including arm and leg movement. Class 3 requires more reflective tape (covering the torso and extremities) and a higher minimum background material area.
ANSI Class E (found on FR bib overalls and pants) achieves Class 3 total system visibility when worn with a Class 3 upper-body garment. Use the ANSI Class filter on this page to sort by compliance level.
Arc ratings across our FR hi-vis collection span a broad range:
- FR hi-vis vests: 5.5–9 cal/cm² (NFPA 70E CAT 1–2)
- FR hi-vis shirts: 8–12 cal/cm² (NFPA 70E CAT 2)
- FR hi-vis hoodies: 8–12 cal/cm² (NFPA 70E CAT 2)
- FR hi-vis jackets and parkas: 8.5–35+ cal/cm² (CAT 2–4)
- FR hi-vis coveralls: 8.5–9 cal/cm² (CAT 2)
Always match the garment's arc rating to the incident energy calculated in your site's arc flash hazard analysis. Do not select a garment based on ANSI class alone without verifying the arc rating meets your specific PPE category requirement.
Dual-certified FR hi-vis clothing is required or strongly recommended in:
- Electrical utility and power distribution — overhead and underground line workers performing energized work near roadways, fall under both NFPA 70E (arc flash) and ANSI 107 (roadway visibility) simultaneously
- Natural gas utilities and pipeline operations — field crews working near roadways under NFPA 2112 flash fire requirements and ANSI visibility
- Transportation and highway construction — electrical workers in traffic control zones performing energized panel or transformer work
- Oil and gas extraction and midstream — workers on active roadway sites near hydrocarbon hazards requiring ANSI visibility and flash fire compliance
- Railway and airport electrical maintenance — energized work near active rail or aircraft movement requiring both arc flash and visibility PPE
Yes — on properly certified FR hi-vis garments, the reflective tape itself is FR-rated and non-melting, sewn with Nomex® thread on FR binding. This is a critical distinction: a standard hi-vis vest or jacket with non-FR reflective tape attached to an otherwise FR fabric is not compliant. The entire garment — fabric, tape, thread, binding, and closures — must be non-melting and FR-compliant for the garment to carry a valid dual certification.
When purchasing, verify the product description and certification label explicitly state that reflective trim, thread, and closures are FR-compliant. All garments in our FR hi-vis collection are manufactured to this standard by certified FR workwear brands.
Machine wash warm (up to 140°F) with standard laundry detergent. Do not use bleach, hydrogen peroxide, optical brighteners, fabric softeners, or starch — these degrade both FR fabric performance and the reflective properties of the silver reflective tape over time.
Wash inside out or in a laundry bag to reduce abrasion on reflective tape. Tumble dry low or air dry — high heat accelerates tape delamination. Inspect reflective tape before each shift: damaged, missing, or delaminated tape compromises the ANSI certification and the garment should be retired or repaired. All FR garments with contamination (oil, grease, petrochemicals) must have contaminants fully removed before returning to service.
