Shop hi vis safety vests by type:
- ANSI Class 2 Vests — The most commonly required vest class for construction and general industry. Meets ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R Class 2 with minimum background material and retroreflective tape requirements.
- ANSI Class 3 Vests — Highest-visibility vests required for workers near roadways with traffic speeds above 25 mph. Extended coverage with more background material and reflective tape than Class 2.
- Mesh Vests — Lightweight breathable polyester mesh vests for warm-weather applications. The most widely used vest style on construction sites.
- Construction Vests — Heavier-duty solid fabric vests with more pockets for tool and material storage on active construction sites.
- Surveyor Vests — Multi-pocket surveyor-style vests with 5+ pockets, mic tabs, and pen slots for survey crews, inspectors, and project managers.
- Breakaway Vests — Vests designed to tear away quickly if caught on equipment — required for some municipal and utility applications.
- Lighted Vests — Hi vis vests with integrated LED lighting for low-light or night-work visibility.
- X Back Vests — Vests with the X Back reflective tape pattern for enhanced rear-facing visibility.
- Public Safety Vests — Law enforcement, fire, EMS, and first responder-style hi vis vests, often in ANSI Type P Class 2 certification.
- Contrast Two Tone Vests — Two-tone hi vis vests with contrasting panels for DOT applications, parking enforcement, and professional appearance.
- Adjustable Vests — Hook-and-loop side-adjustable vests that fit multiple body sizes — ideal for shared-use programs.
- Economy Vests — Budget-priced mesh vests for high-volume, short-term, or visitor applications starting under $7.
- Enhanced Visibility Vests — Non-ANSI bright-color vests for environments with lower hazard levels.

High Visibility Safety Vests — Frequently Asked Questions
ANSI Class 2 safety vests meet the minimum fluorescent background material area and retroreflective tape requirements for moderate-risk traffic environments — work zones with speeds of 25–50 mph where worker attention may be divided. Class 2 is the most commonly required vest class for road construction, utility work, and general site work.
ANSI Class 3 safety vests require more background material and additional retroreflective tape, including tape on the sleeves (which is why most Class 3 garments are full jackets rather than vests). True Class 3 vests exist but are less common — more typically, Class 3 is achieved by pairing a Class 2 vest with Class E pants, or wearing a Class 3 jacket. Class 3 is required for high-speed roadways (over 50 mph), nighttime work, and any environment with complex visual backgrounds. A Class 3 garment always satisfies Class 2 requirements.
A breakaway safety vest is designed to tear away quickly and cleanly if the garment becomes caught on equipment, a vehicle, or machinery. The breakaway feature — typically tear-away side seams or a breakaway front closure — reduces the risk of a worker being dragged or pulled by a snagged vest. Breakaway vests are required or strongly recommended for workers who work in close proximity to moving vehicles or machinery where snagging is a risk, including traffic control officers, flaggers, toll booth workers, and parking enforcement personnel. They are also commonly required for law enforcement and public safety workers who need to quickly remove their vest in certain situations.
A surveyor vest is a heavy-duty safety vest with an extensive pocket configuration designed for engineers, surveyors, inspectors, and field technicians who need to carry tools, instruments, notebooks, and equipment while working. Surveyor vests typically feature deep chest pockets, pencil slots, ruler pockets, radio pockets, and multiple accessory loops — far more storage than a standard construction vest. They are ANSI-certified in Class 2 or Class 3 and available in mesh or solid fabric. Standard safety vests have minimal pocketing and are optimized for lightweight wear and quick donning/doffing rather than tool carry.
Public safety vests (also called Type P vests under ANSI/ISEA 107) are specifically designed for law enforcement, fire, emergency medical, and other public safety personnel. They are engineered to meet ANSI visibility requirements while also allowing freedom of movement, quick removal, and compatibility with duty belts, body armor, and other public safety equipment. Many public safety vests feature breakaway closures, mic clip tabs, badge/ID holders, and radio pockets. They must balance high visibility with the operational and safety needs of first responders — requirements that differ significantly from standard construction vests.
Mesh safety vests are made from an open-weave fabric that allows airflow, making them significantly cooler in warm conditions. They are the most common choice for warm-weather outdoor work and are widely used in road construction, parking management, and event management. The open weave means mesh vests are not windproof or water-resistant.
Solid fabric safety vests (also called non-mesh or polyester vests) are made from a closed-weave fabric that provides wind resistance and some protection against light rain and cool temperatures. They are better suited for year-round use in variable conditions. Solid vests also provide a cleaner surface for printed logos. For cold weather, solid fabric vests layer better as an outer visibility layer over insulating garments.
Lighted safety vests incorporate LED lighting elements — typically integrated into the retroreflective tape positions or along the vest perimeter — providing active, battery-powered illumination in addition to passive retroreflectivity. Unlike retroreflective tape (which requires a light source to reflect back), LED-lighted vests actively emit light and are visible in complete darkness even without vehicle headlights or other external light sources. They are used by first responders, nighttime road crews, event staff, cyclists, pedestrians in low-light zones, and emergency services personnel. Many lighted vests offer multiple flash modes and are rechargeable via USB.
A contrast two-tone safety vest (also called a DOT vest or contrast vest) features fluorescent background material combined with a contrasting color panel — typically black or dark navy — that increases the visual definition and conspicuity of the retroreflective tape against the background fabric. The contrasting panel helps the retroreflective striping stand out more clearly, particularly in environments with complex visual backgrounds. These vests meet ANSI/ISEA 107 certification requirements while providing enhanced visual impact. They are popular with traffic control, parking enforcement, and public safety applications.
X Back safety vests have retroreflective tape arranged in an "X" pattern across the back of the vest rather than standard horizontal bands. The X pattern ensures retroreflective tape is visible at all body angles — especially when the worker is bent over, crouched, or turned away from traffic. Some state DOTs, project specs, and transportation agencies require X Back configuration for flaggers and road construction workers. X Back vests are otherwise used wherever maximum back-visibility is needed regardless of worker body position.
