Breakaway Vests
Breakaway Safety Vests — 5-Point Tear-Away Design
Breakaway safety vests address a hazard that visibility alone doesn't solve: entanglement. For workers operating near conveyors, rotating machinery, vehicles, or other equipment with moving parts, a standard vest can become a serious snag risk — if the vest catches on equipment, it can pull the wearer into the machinery before they're able to react. Breakaway vests solve this with a 5-point tear-away design — release points at both shoulders, both sides, and the front closure — engineered to separate instantly when force is applied, letting the wearer come free of the vest rather than being dragged into the hazard.
OSHA recognizes breakaway vests as the recommended choice for workers operating near conveyors or rotating machinery specifically because of this entanglement risk. Common wearers include construction crews working around heavy equipment, tree trimmers and arborists, utility and road crews, warehouse workers near conveyor systems, and public safety personnel where loose clothing near vehicles or equipment poses a similar risk.
Our breakaway vest collection is available in ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 2 and Class 3, in mesh and solid polyester construction, including flame resistant mesh and NOMEX options for FR-required environments, with breakaway points typically using either hook-and-loop or specialized quick-release zipper systems (such as Zip-N-Rip closures) designed to separate cleanly under moderate force without accidental release during normal movement. Use the filters on this page to sort by ANSI class, material, and brand.

Breakaway Safety Vests — Frequently Asked Questions
The 5-point design places release points at the two shoulders, two sides, and the front closure — typically using hook-and-loop fasteners or specialized quick-release zipper systems engineered to separate under tension. If any part of the vest gets caught on machinery, a conveyor, or equipment, the applied force pulls the release points apart, allowing the entire vest to come away from the wearer's body almost instantly. This is designed to release reliably under the kind of sudden force that would occur during an actual snag, while still holding securely during normal work movement, walking, bending, and reaching.
OSHA recommends breakaway safety vests for workers operating near conveyors or rotating machinery, recognizing that a standard vest can become a snag hazard in these environments. Whether a breakaway vest is formally required typically depends on your specific employer's safety program, the equipment involved, and any site-specific hazard assessment, rather than a single blanket federal mandate across all industries. Given the relatively low added cost of breakaway versus standard closure vests, many safety professionals recommend defaulting to breakaway whenever there's reasonable potential for a snag hazard, rather than waiting for a specific incident or audit finding to drive the change.
No — breakaway construction is a safety feature independent of ANSI/ISEA 107 visibility certification. A breakaway vest can be certified to Class 2 or Class 3 just like a standard closure vest, as long as it meets the same background material and retroreflective tape requirements. The breakaway points themselves don't reduce the certified visibility area when properly designed; they simply add a mechanical safety feature on top of the standard visibility compliance.
Quality breakaway vests are engineered to hold securely through normal movement — walking, bending, reaching, climbing — and release only under the kind of sudden, significant force that would occur during an actual snag on equipment. That said, fit matters: a properly sized vest that closes snugly without excessive tension on the release points will perform more predictably than one that's stretched too tight or left loose and flapping. If you experience frequent accidental releases during normal activity, check that the vest is sized correctly and that the release points are properly fastened before assuming the product itself is defective.
Most hook-and-loop breakaway points can simply be refastened and the vest returned to service immediately, since the fastener itself typically isn't damaged by a normal release — this is one of the practical advantages of hook-and-loop over systems that require replacement parts. Zipper-based quick-release systems should be inspected after a release event to confirm the mechanism still engages properly before returning the vest to use. Regardless of closure type, inspect the vest for any tearing of the fabric itself (not just the release point) after a snag event, since fabric damage beyond the designed release points may compromise the vest's structural integrity or visibility coverage going forward.
