Two-tone contrast vests pair a fluorescent yellow-green or orange upper section with a contrasting black (or other dark color) lower section — most commonly seen as a "black bottom" mesh vest. This design serves two purposes at once: the dark lower panel hides dirt, grease, and soiling far better than solid fluorescent fabric in areas that get the most contact with equipment and ground-level work, while the high-contrast color blocking itself improves daytime conspicuity beyond what a solid-color vest provides — the human eye picks up sharp color transitions more readily than a uniform color field.
These vests are frequently associated with DOT (Department of Transportation) work — tow truck operators, transportation officials, and equipment operators commonly favor this style, and many U.S. DOT personnel specifically recommend two-tone, high-contrast vest designs for daytime roadway visibility.
