Lighted Vests
Illuminated Safety Vests - LED & Glow-in-the-Dark
Standard retroreflective tape only works when light is directed at it — vehicle headlights, a flashlight, or another light source. In environments with little to no ambient or directional light, retroreflective material alone provides limited visibility. Illuminated safety vests solve this with active light sources built directly into the fabric, providing visibility even when no external light is shining on the wearer.
Our illuminated vest collection includes two distinct technologies:
- LED-powered vests — battery-powered LED lights integrated into the vest fabric, typically offering multiple modes (steady on, slow flash, fast flash). These provide the brightest, most attention-grabbing illumination and are well-suited for active visibility needs like directing traffic or flagging in low-light conditions. Battery life typically ranges from several hours to over a day depending on the mode used, with rechargeable lithium-ion options reducing the need for disposable batteries.
- Phosphorescent (glow-in-the-dark) vests — charged by exposure to natural or artificial light (no batteries required), these vests absorb light energy and re-emit it as a steady glow for a period after the light source is removed. They provide a third layer of visibility alongside standard fluorescent and retroreflective material, without the maintenance of batteries or charging.
Common applications include parking lot attendants, event staff working night shifts, airport ground crew, school crossing guards, and any role involving extended work in low-light or unlit areas where reliance on passing headlights alone isn't sufficient. Use the filters on this page to sort by technology type, ANSI class, and brand.

Illuminated Safety Vests — Frequently Asked Questions
Choose an LED vest when you need the brightest, most attention-grabbing visibility — directing traffic, active flagging, or any role where maximum visibility at distance matters most. LED vests typically offer flashing modes that draw more attention than a steady glow, and the brightness is consistent regardless of how recently the vest was exposed to light. Choose a phosphorescent vest when you want a maintenance-free option with no batteries to charge or replace — useful for roles with intermittent low-light exposure, backup/emergency stock, or situations where battery management is impractical. Phosphorescent glow is generally less bright than LED illumination and fades gradually after the light source is removed, so it's better suited to supplementary visibility rather than primary signaling.
Battery life varies significantly by model and the lighting mode used. Steady-on mode typically drains the battery faster than slow-flash mode, which is more energy-efficient for extended use. Many disposable-battery LED vests run for roughly 8-12 hours on a set of AA batteries, while rechargeable lithium-ion models can offer 16+ hours of runtime on a single charge, with charge times typically around 4-5 hours. For full-shift or multi-day use, a rechargeable model with a predictable charging routine generally proves more reliable than relying on disposable batteries that need to be tracked and replaced.
Many illuminated vests are also certified to ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 2 or Class 3, combining standard fluorescent background material and retroreflective tape with the added LED or phosphorescent illumination as a supplementary feature — check the specific product for its ANSI certification status, since not every illuminated vest on the market carries formal ANSI certification. If your work requires ANSI compliance, confirm the sewn-in certification label is present rather than assuming the lighting feature alone satisfies a visibility requirement.
Phosphorescent material charges passively through exposure to any light source — natural sunlight or artificial indoor/outdoor lighting — typically reaching a usable charge within a few minutes of bright light exposure. No batteries, plugs, or active charging steps are required. The glow gradually fades over a period of hours after the light source is removed and needs to be "recharged" again through renewed light exposure to restore brightness. For vests stored in dark areas between uses, briefly exposing the vest to bright light before a shift helps ensure maximum glow performance when needed.
LED vests should generally not be machine washed with the battery and control unit still attached — check the manufacturer's instructions, as many LED vests have a removable battery pack or control module specifically so the fabric portion can be washed separately. Phosphorescent (glow-in-the-dark) vests, having no electronic components, are generally easier to care for and can typically follow standard hi-vis garment washing guidelines (cold water, gentle cycle, no fabric softener, avoid high heat). Always check the specific product's care label before washing, since instructions vary by manufacturer and technology type.
