Personal Protective Equipment — Frequently Asked Questions
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is any clothing, device, or gear worn by a worker to minimize exposure to hazards that can cause injuries or illness. PPE covers a broad range of products — from hard hats and safety glasses to gloves, hearing protection, ergonomic supports, and chemical-splash garments. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132 (general industry) and 1926.95 (construction) require employers to assess workplace hazards and provide workers with appropriate PPE at no cost. The employer is responsible for ensuring PPE fits properly, is maintained in sanitary condition, and that workers are trained in its use. PPE is considered the last line of defense in the hierarchy of hazard controls — used when engineering and administrative controls alone cannot sufficiently reduce risk.
Safety Smart Gear carries a comprehensive range of PPE for industrial and workplace safety, including:
Head Protection — hard hats, safety helmets, caps, face shields, and balaclavas. Eye & Face Protection — safety glasses in full-frame, half-frame, frameless, foam-lined, anti-fog, polarized, and bifocal styles, plus goggles and over-the-glasses (OTG) options. Hand Protection — work gloves, cut-resistant gloves, cold weather gloves, nitrile gloves, mechanics gloves, leather gloves, and disposable gloves. Hearing Protection — earplugs and earmuffs. Ergonomic Supports — back supports, wrist supports, knee pads, and ergonomic gloves. Disposable Garments — coveralls, lab suits, boot covers, and disposable gloves. Chemical Splash — splash-resistant garments and face protection. Industrial Rain Gear — rain jackets, raincoats, rain pants, bibs, and suits. Heat Stress Relief — cooling vests, head and neck cooling accessories, and hats. Lighting — work lights and task lighting for low-visibility environments. Gear Bags — tool and PPE storage bags.
ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 is the American National Standard for occupational eye and face protection — it defines performance requirements for impact resistance, optical clarity, coverage, and lens markings. All safety glasses sold for occupational use should carry the Z87 or Z87+ marking on the lens and frame. The markings indicate the protection level: Z87 indicates basic impact protection; Z87+ (with the plus sign) indicates high-impact protection, tested against higher-velocity projectiles. Additional markings indicate specific protection types: D3 for splash protection, D4 for dust protection, D5 for fine dust, U for UV protection (followed by a scale number), and L for visible light filtration. Always check that safety glasses display these markings — decorative or non-certified eyewear does not meet OSHA requirements.
Hard hats and safety helmets in the United States are governed by ANSI/ISEA Z89.1. This standard defines two types and three classes of head protection. Type I helmets protect only the top of the head; Type II helmets protect the top and sides. Class E (Electrical) provides dielectric protection up to 20,000 volts; Class G (General) provides dielectric protection up to 2,200 volts; Class C (Conductive) provides no electrical protection. Traditional hard hats meet ANSI Z89.1, while newer-style safety helmets (which resemble climbing helmets with chin straps and side-impact protection) meet both ANSI Z89.1 and often EN 397 European standards. Many safety professionals are transitioning from hard hats to safety helmets for improved protection and retention.
Cut-resistant gloves in the US are rated under ANSI/ISEA 105, which uses a scale from A1 (lowest) to A9 (highest) based on the force required to cut through the glove material. The European equivalent is EN 388, which uses a letter scale (A–F). When selecting cut-resistant gloves, match the cut level to the specific cutting hazard: light assembly work may only require A2–A3, while glass handling, metal fabrication, or blade work may require A4–A6 or higher. Note that higher cut resistance does not always mean better dexterity — heavier cut protection often reduces grip sensitivity. Also consider whether puncture resistance, chemical resistance, or heat resistance are needed alongside cut protection for your specific application.
Disposable coveralls (also called single-use or limited-use garments) are designed for applications where contamination, cross-contamination prevention, or post-use disposal is required — such as asbestos abatement, hazmat response, painting, cleanroom work, or chemical spill cleanup. Common materials include Tyvek® (DuPont), polypropylene, and microporous film laminates. They are rated by NFPA or ASTM standards depending on the chemical hazard level.
Reusable chemical-splash garments are made from heavier PVC, neoprene, or chemical-resistant fabrics designed for repeated use in environments with ongoing splash or spray exposure — such as chemical processing, laboratories, and industrial cleaning. They can be washed and decontaminated between uses. The right choice depends on the type of chemical hazard, exposure frequency, and whether decontamination between uses is practical and safe.
Hearing protection is rated by its Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) — a number in decibels (dB) that indicates how much noise the device reduces. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 requires hearing protection when workers are exposed to noise at or above 90 dB(A) as an 8-hour time-weighted average (or 85 dB(A) under the hearing conservation program). When selecting hearing protection: match the NRR to the noise level in your environment; earmuffs typically provide higher NRR and are easier to don and remove repeatedly; earplugs generally provide higher attenuation and are more comfortable for all-day wear in hot environments. OSHA requires the employer to provide a variety of hearing protectors and allow workers to choose from those options. Regular audiometric testing is required for workers in the hearing conservation program.
Heat stress is a serious OSHA-recognized hazard for outdoor and industrial workers in warm conditions. Safety Smart Gear carries a range of heat stress relief PPE including cooling vests (evaporative, phase-change, and ice-insert styles), head and neck cooling wraps and towels, sun shade hats with extended brims, and neck gaiters and buffs with UV and cooling properties. Cooling vests are particularly effective for workers in direct sun or confined hot spaces — phase-change vests maintain a consistent temperature for several hours and can be recharged by placing the inserts in cool water or a cooler. These products complement — but do not replace — proper hydration schedules, rest breaks in shaded or cool areas, and acclimatization programs as required under OSHA's heat illness prevention guidelines.
