Head Protection
Head Protection - Hard Hats, Liners & Stocking Caps (ANSI Z89.1)
Hard hats are the foundational PPE requirement on nearly every construction, industrial, and utility job site. OSHA requires head protection wherever there is a potential for injury from falling or flying objects, electrical shock and burns, or head bumps against fixed objects (29 CFR 1910.135). Hard hats sold in the U.S. must meet ANSI/ISEA Z89.1, the American National Standard for Industrial Head Protection, which defines two classification systems: Type (impact protection area) and Class (electrical insulation rating).
Type describes the area of the head protected from impact: Type I hard hats protect against vertical, top-of-head impacts — the most common hazard from falling objects. Type II hard hats add protection against lateral (side, front, and back) impacts, recommended where workers may strike their head against fixed objects or be struck from the side by swinging or moving equipment.
Class describes electrical (dielectric) protection: Class G (General) hard hats are tested to 2,200 volts — suitable for most construction and general industrial environments. Class E (Electrical) hard hats are tested to 20,000 volts and are required for electrical utility work and any task involving exposure to high-voltage conductors. Class C (Conductive) hard hats provide no electrical protection and are used only in non-electrical, well-ventilated environments where airflow through vents is preferred.
Our hard hat collection includes both 4-point and 6-point ratchet and pinlock suspension systems in cap and full-brim styles, available in Type I and Type II, Class E, G, and C configurations. Ratchet suspensions allow tool-free size adjustment via a dial — preferred for shared hard hats or workers needing frequent fit changes. Pinlock suspensions adjust to preset positions and are more resistant to debris in harsh environments. We also carry hard hat liners (winter liners, FR liners, and cooling liners) and stocking caps designed to fit comfortably under hard hats without compromising suspension clearance or certification.
Use the filters on this page to sort by Type, Class, suspension style, and brand. For arc-flash-rated head and neck accessories, see our FR accessories collection.

Hard Hats & Head Protection — Frequently Asked Questions
Type I hard hats are designed to reduce the force of impact from blows only to the top of the head — the most common configuration, suitable for general construction, manufacturing, and industrial environments where falling objects are the primary hazard.
Type II hard hats add protection against lateral impacts — blows to the side, front, or back of the head — through thicker shells and strategically placed suspension systems. Type II is recommended where workers may strike their head against fixed objects, work in confined spaces, or face hazards from swinging equipment, and is increasingly specified as a conservative best practice across construction sites generally.
Hard hat Class describes the level of electrical (dielectric) protection, independent of Type:
- Class G (General) — tested to withstand up to 2,200 volts. Suitable for most construction and general industrial environments with standard electrical exposure.
- Class E (Electrical) — tested to withstand up to 20,000 volts. Required for electrical utility workers, linemen, and any task involving exposure to high-voltage conductors or equipment.
- Class C (Conductive) — provides no electrical protection. Often vented for comfort and used only in environments with zero electrical hazard. A Class C hard hat must never be used near energized electrical conductors.
Yes — Type and Class are independent classifications. A hard hat can be Type I Class E, Type II Class E, Type I Class G, and so on. The Type designation refers to impact area coverage (top vs. top + lateral); the Class designation refers to dielectric (electrical) performance. An electrician or utility worker needs Class E regardless of whether they choose Type I (lighter, top-impact only) or Type II (heavier, adds lateral protection). Many electricians prefer Type I Class E for reduced weight during long shifts; others choose Type II Class E for additional impact protection in congested work areas.
Ratchet suspensions use a dial or knob on the back of the hard hat for tool-free size adjustment — turn to tighten or loosen. This makes ratchet suspensions ideal for shared hard hats, frequently changing crews, or workers who need quick fit adjustments throughout the day. Most modern hard hats use ratchet suspensions.
Pinlock suspensions adjust manually by repositioning straps into preset holes. They are simpler mechanically and more resistant to clogging from dust, mud, or debris in harsh outdoor environments — a consideration in some construction and oilfield settings where ratchet mechanisms can become difficult to operate when dirty.
Most manufacturers recommend replacing the hard hat shell every 5 years and the suspension system every 12 months, depending on use and exposure conditions. Hard hat shells degrade from UV exposure, heat, and chemical contact over time — a shell that looks structurally sound may have reduced impact performance after years of outdoor service. Always inspect for cracks, dents, discoloration, or chalky texture before each use, and replace immediately after any impact, regardless of visible damage. Never drill holes, modify the shell, or remove suspension components — these actions void the ANSI Z89.1 certification.
Yes, as long as the liner does not interfere with the suspension system or reduce the clearance between the shell and your head — this clearance is what allows the suspension to absorb impact energy. Hard hat winter liners and stocking caps are designed to fit within the suspension without compressing it. Avoid bulky liners that push the hard hat up off your head or alter how the chin strap fits. For electrical workers, ensure any liner worn under a Class E hard hat does not reduce dielectric protection — non-conductive materials are recommended. FR-rated hard hat liners are available for workers in arc flash environments; see our FR accessories page.
