Hard Hats - Safety Helmets
Hard Hats & Safety Helmets - ANSI Z89.1 Type I & II, Class E & C
All hard hats and safety helmets in this category are certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1, the American National Standard for industrial head protection, under a Type and Class system. Type describes the impact protection direction: Type I protects against impacts to the top of the head only (the most common traditional hard hat); Type II protects against both top impacts and lateral (side) impacts, providing more comprehensive protection and required by some applications like work at height and environments with lateral impact risk. Class describes electrical insulation: Class E (Electrical, 20,000 volts) for work near electrical hazards; Class G (General, 2,200 volts) for general industry; Class C (Conductive) for environments where electrical insulation is not required and ventilation is prioritized. Use the ANSI Certified filter to sort by the specific Type/Class combination required by your site or OSHA mandate.
Hard Hats & Safety Helmets — ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Certified in Cap Style, Full Brim & Modern Helmet Designs
The collection includes both traditional hard hat styles (cap style and full brim, in ABS and HDPE construction, 4-point and 6-point ratchet suspension) and modern safety helmets — European-influenced climbing-style helmet designs with integrated foam inner liners, integrated chin straps, accessory attachment slots (for face shields, earmuffs, headlamps), and in some cases Mips® technology (a low-friction layer inside the shell that redirects rotational forces during angled impacts, reducing brain injury risk from the mechanism most common in real-world head impacts). Mips-equipped models include the PIP Traverse™ full-brim and micro-brim climbing helmets (280-HP1491RM, 280-HP1491RVM-FB, 280-HP1491RM-FB) and Securis safety helmets with their full accessory ecosystem.
Brands include PIP (26 styles — the largest selection, including the Traverse™ industrial climbing helmet line), Pyramex (20 styles), Securis (16 styles with LED headlamp, earmuff, and sweat pad accessories), Portwest (Height Endurance Pro and Expert climbing helmets, Premier full-brim hard hat), DeWALT (DPG22 and DPG22V Type II Class E and Class C safety helmets with polycarbonate/ABS shell and EPS foam liner), Radians, Ergodyne, OccuNomix, and Kishigo. Over 77 total hard hats and safety helmets, in 15+ colors including hi-vis yellow, hi-vis orange, and standard construction colors.

Hard Hats & Safety Helmets — Frequently Asked Questions
Under ANSI/ISEA Z89.1, Type I hard hats are designed to reduce the force of impact to the top of the head only — the traditional hard hat design that has been in use for decades. Type II hard hats also protect against lateral (side) impacts in addition to top impacts, using a foam inner liner inside the shell that absorbs energy from angled and side blows. Type II is required by some employers and OSHA standards for specific applications, particularly work at height (where an angled fall to a corner or edge is a realistic mechanism) and increasingly for general construction as the industry updates its head protection standards. Modern safety helmets in a climbing-helmet style are typically Type II.
ANSI Z89.1 electrical classes define the dielectric performance of the hard hat shell. Class E (Electrical) hard hats are tested to 20,000 volts AC and reduce exposure to high-voltage electrical conductors — required for most electrical utility and construction work near energized equipment. Class G (General) is tested to 2,200 volts and covers general construction environments with lower voltage exposure risk. Class C (Conductive) provides no electrical insulation — often vented hard hats fall into Class C since ventilation holes break the dielectric barrier. Never choose Class C for any work near electrical hazards. Confirm the correct class with your site's electrical hazard assessment.
Mips® (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is a low-friction slip-plane layer built inside the helmet between the outer shell and the suspension or foam liner. In a real-world head impact — which is rarely perfectly vertical, more commonly occurring at an angle — the brain is subject to both linear (direct) and rotational (twisting) forces. The Mips layer allows approximately 10–15mm of independent movement between the head and the shell at the moment of impact, designed to redirect and reduce the rotational energy transmitted to the brain. The technology comes from bicycle and sports helmet research and is increasingly being incorporated into industrial safety helmets — PIP Traverse™ and Securis models in this collection offer Mips variants. It does not affect ANSI Z89.1 Type/Class certification, which tests linear impact performance.
Traditional hard hats (cap-style and full-brim) use a hard thermoplastic shell with an interior suspension system providing an air gap between the shell and the skull — the suspension absorbs top-impact energy. Modern safety helmets, like the PIP Traverse™ and Portwest Height Endurance line, add an integrated foam liner (EPS) for improved impact energy absorption, a chin strap for retention (important for work at height), side slots or accessory rails for face shields, earmuffs, and headlamps, and a more helmet-like form factor derived from climbing and arborist helmet design. They remain ANSI Z89.1 certified but typically as Type II. The key practical differences: modern helmets stay on the head during a fall (chin strap), absorb side impacts (foam liner + Type II design), and support a full PPE accessory ecosystem.
Hard hat replacement guidelines are set by ANSI Z89.1 and the individual manufacturer. As a general rule: the outer shell should be replaced every 5 years from the date of manufacture (marked inside the shell) regardless of visible condition, since UV exposure and heat cycles degrade the polymer's impact- resistance properties over time. The interior suspension should be replaced every 1–2 years, or immediately after any impact that may have loaded the suspension. Both shell and suspension should be replaced immediately after any significant impact, even if no visible damage is apparent — impact-absorbing systems are often permanently deformed by a single high-energy event without obvious cracking. Always replace if you notice cracking, denting, color fading from UV exposure, or any penetration of the shell.
