Cold Weather Accessories - Balaclavas, Neck Gaiters & Liners
Working outdoors in cold conditions creates real risk of cold stress — and head, neck, and face coverage are often the most overlooked layers in a winter PPE program, even though these areas lose body heat quickly when exposed. The right fabric choice matters as much as the garment type: cotton loses most of its insulating value when it becomes wet from sweat, snow, or rain, since wet cotton fibers conduct heat away from the body rather than trapping it. Synthetic fabrics (polyester blends, fleece) and merino wool continue to insulate even when damp, making them the better choice for active outdoor work where sweating is likely.
Cold Weather Accessories — Balaclavas, Neck Gaiters & Liners
Our cold weather accessories collection includes:
- Balaclavas — full head, face, and neck coverage, offering the most complete protection against biting wind and extreme cold. Available in full-coverage (face and neck, eyes exposed), convertible (adjustable to expose more or less of the face depending on conditions), and helmet-liner styles designed to fit under hard hats without adding bulk.
- Neck Gaiters — a tube of fabric worn around the neck that can be pulled up to cover the lower face and nose as needed. More adjustable and lower-profile than a balaclava, though less secure and more prone to sliding down during active movement.
- Hard Hat Liners — winter liners designed to fit inside hard hat suspension systems without compressing them or pushing the hat off your head, providing warmth without compromising the hard hat's ANSI Z89.1 certification or fit.
- Winter Hats & Beanies — standalone head coverage for breaks, transit between job sites, or work outside of hard hat zones.
Use the filters on this page to sort by product type, fabric, and brand. For arc-flash-rated cold weather accessories certified to NFPA 70E, see our FR Accessories collection instead — standard cold weather gear does not provide arc flash protection.

Cold Weather Accessories — Frequently Asked Questions
Cotton fibers absorb and hold moisture rather than repelling it. Dry cotton traps air between its fibers, which provides insulation — but once cotton becomes wet (from sweat, rain, or snow), those air pockets collapse and the wet fibers actually conduct heat away from the body faster than they would insulate it when dry. This is why a sweat-soaked cotton balaclava or hat can leave you colder than wearing nothing at all once you stop moving.
For active outdoor work where sweating is likely, choose synthetic fabrics (polyester blends, fleece) or merino wool, both of which continue to provide meaningful insulation even when damp, and dry faster than cotton when conditions allow.
A balaclava provides more complete and secure coverage — head, face, and neck in one piece — making it the better choice for extreme cold, high wind, or extended outdoor exposure where reliable full coverage matters most.
A neck gaiter is more adjustable and versatile — it can be worn low around just the neck on milder days, or pulled up to cover the nose and mouth when needed, then pulled back down. The tradeoff is that gaiters can slide down more easily during active movement and offer less consistent coverage than a balaclava in sustained harsh conditions. Many workers carry both: a gaiter for variable conditions throughout the day, and a balaclava for the coldest stretches.
A properly designed hard hat winter liner should not compress the suspension system or push the hard hat up off your head — both of which would reduce the clearance gap that allows the suspension to absorb impact energy. Look for liners specifically described as designed for use under hard hats, and avoid bulky aftermarket liners not intended for this purpose. The liner itself does not carry or affect the ANSI Z89.1 certification of the hard hat — that certification applies to the hard hat shell and suspension system as tested, so always verify the liner fits properly without altering how the hard hat sits or how the chin strap (if used) secures.
Yes — look for balaclavas specifically described as helmet-compatible or helmet-liner styles, which use thin, stretchy, breathable materials designed to fit snugly under a helmet or hard hat without adding bulk that would compromise fit. Thicker thermal fleece balaclavas designed for standalone wear may not fit comfortably under a hard hat suspension and can create pressure points. If you regularly wear a hard hat in cold conditions, choose a liner-style balaclava designed for that specific use case rather than a general outdoor balaclava.
Most balaclavas and neck gaiters are machine washable — check the manufacturer's care label for specific instructions, as merino wool and synthetic fleece may have different requirements. Regular washing helps maintain breathability and prevents odor buildup from repeated wear. Avoid high heat when drying synthetic fabrics, as it can degrade fiber performance and elasticity over time. For merino wool styles, a gentle or wool-specific wash cycle helps preserve the natural fiber structure and softness.
