Flame Resistant Bib Overalls for Electrical Arc Flash Protection
Flame resistant bib overalls deliver comprehensive lower-body and torso protection for workers exposed to arc flash, flash fire, and thermal hazards. Whether you're an electrician, utility worker, or oil and gas professional, FR bibs meet NFPA 70E, NFPA 2112, and ASTM F1506 safety standards while providing durability, comfort, and compliance in high-risk environments.
Our selection includes:
— Arc-rated bibs (8 to 40+ cal/cm² ATPV) for Category 1 through Category 4 electrical hazards
— Insulated FR overalls for cold-weather work, with quilted or modacrylic lining and waterproof seals
— Class E high-visibility rain bibs for utility line work and outdoor electrical tasks
— Unlined FR bibs for warm climates and layering flexibility
— Dual-hazard overalls (arc flash + flash fire + chemical splash) for oil, gas, and petrochemical sites
Key differences: FR clothing resists ignition and self-extinguishes. Arc-rated (AR) garments have been tested to ASTM F1959 and assigned a specific calorie rating (ATPV or EBT) for protection against arc flash thermal energy. NFPA 70E governs electrical worker safety; NFPA 2112 covers flash fire hazards in industrial settings. Mixing garments from different manufacturers without a certified assembly rating does not produce a compliant system.
All bibs feature reinforced stress points, adjustable suspenders, and tool pockets for practicality. Many include knee pad pockets, leg zippers for easy on/off, and reflective trim for low-light visibility. Materials range from 100% cotton Indura and Nomex IIIA to blends of Kevlar, polyester, and modacrylic for enhanced thermal performance.
Choose based on your hazard assessment: Category 1 (under 5 cal/cm²) for limited flash fire exposure; Category 2 (8–24 cal/cm²) for routine electrical work; Category 3 (25–40 cal/cm²) for high-energy switchgear; Category 4 (40+ cal/cm²) for arc flash-prone heavy industry. All our FR bibs are guaranteed flame resistant for the life of the garment, tested to survive washings without degradation, and backed by industry-trusted brands like Big Bill, NASCO, Bulwark, Portwest, and Tingley.

FR Bib Overalls — Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing the right flame resistant bib overalls involves understanding arc ratings, compliance standards, and proper care. Here are answers to the questions our customers ask most often.
FR bib overalls (flame resistant bib overalls) are lower-body protective garments engineered to resist ignition, self-extinguish after a flame source is removed, and minimize burn injuries from arc flash or flash fire incidents. Unlike standard workwear, FR bibs will not melt, drip, or continue to burn — critical properties that reduce the severity of thermal injuries.
Workers required to wear FR bib overalls typically include electricians and electrical maintenance workers exposed to arc flash hazards, utility line workers, oil and gas field workers, petrochemical plant personnel, and anyone operating under NFPA 70E or NFPA 2112 compliance requirements.
Arc rating is measured in calories per square centimeter (cal/cm²) and indicates the maximum incident energy a garment can absorb before a wearer has a 50% chance of a second-degree burn. NFPA 70E organizes arc-rated PPE into four categories:
| PPE Category | Minimum arc rating | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| CAT 1 | 4 cal/cm² | Low-energy panel work, meter reading |
| CAT 2 | 8 cal/cm² | Most common — switchboards, motor control centers |
| CAT 3 | 25 cal/cm² | High-voltage switchgear, bus work |
| CAT 4 | 40 cal/cm² | High-energy environments, substations, medium-voltage equipment |
Your employer or safety officer should perform an arc flash hazard analysis to determine the required PPE category for each task. When in doubt, choose a garment rated at or above the calculated incident energy for your working distance.
These two standards govern different hazard types and industries:
- NFPA 70E addresses electrical safety — specifically protection from arc flash and arc blast. It applies to workers performing electrical tasks on energized equipment. Garments are rated in cal/cm² (ATPV or EBT) and organized into PPE Categories 1 through 4. All arc-rated clothing is also FR, but not all FR clothing is arc-rated.
- NFPA 2112 covers protection from flash fire — a sudden, short-duration fire exposure common in oil, gas, petrochemical, and refinery environments. This standard focuses on the garment's ability to prevent burn injury during a flash fire event, and is tested under ASTM F1930.
Many FR bib overalls in our collection carry dual certification — meeting both NFPA 70E (arc flash) and NFPA 2112 (flash fire) requirements, making them suitable for workers facing both hazard types, such as utility workers on oil and gas sites. Always verify which standard applies to your workplace before purchasing.
Yes. Several bib overalls in this category are certified to both ANSI/ISEA 107-2015 Class E (high visibility) and NFPA 70E arc flash standards. These garments are designed specifically for utility, electric, and gas workers who need simultaneous protection from arc flash hazards and visibility compliance on roadways or work zones.
Look for the "ANSI Certified" filter on this page to narrow to Class E, Type R Class 3, or Type R Class 3E hi-vis options. Brands like NASCO, Neese Industries, and OccuNomix all offer dual-certified FR hi-vis bibs in our selection.
FR bib overalls are designed to be worn as an outer layer over other clothing, and most styles are cut with a generous fit for this purpose. However, NFPA 70E Article 130.7 requires that every layer of clothing worn under arc-rated PPE be non-melting. This means synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, or acetate must not be worn directly against the skin under arc-rated bibs — they can melt and cause severe burns if heat penetrates the outer layer.
100% cotton or FR-treated undergarments and base layers are acceptable. For maximum compliance, consult your safety program's layering requirements and the garment manufacturer's guidelines.
Proper laundering preserves the flame resistant properties of your bibs. Follow these general guidelines (always check the care label on your specific garment):
- Machine wash warm — up to 140°F (60°C) maximum
- Use a standard laundry detergent; avoid soap with animal fats (tallow)
- Do not use chlorine bleach or liquid non-chlorine bleach — bleach degrades FR protection
- Do not use fabric softeners or starch — they coat fibers and can act as fuel during ignition
- Turn garments inside out before washing to reduce abrasion streaking
- Wash FR garments separately from non-FR clothing
- Tumble dry low or air dry — avoid high heat which can cause shrinkage and reduce coverage
- Ensure all flammable soils (oil, grease, chemicals) are fully removed; if not, dry clean rather than machine wash
Inherently FR fabrics (e.g. Nomex®, Kevlar®) retain flame resistance indefinitely regardless of wash cycles. Treated FR fabrics can lose effectiveness over time if not properly cared for; check manufacturer guidance on wash cycle limits.
FR bib overalls are made from one of two fabric types:
- Inherently FR fabrics — the flame resistance is built into the fiber's molecular structure. Examples include Nomex®, Kevlar®, and modacrylic blends. These garments retain their FR properties for the life of the garment regardless of washing, laundering, or wear. They typically carry a higher upfront cost but offer permanent protection.
- Treated FR fabrics — standard fibers (usually cotton or cotton blends) treated with a flame resistant chemical finish. These are generally more affordable. Protection remains effective if the garment is properly cared for. Bleach, improper laundering, and heavy soiling can degrade the chemical treatment over time.
For high-risk environments or long-term use, inherent FR fabrics are the preferred choice. Use the Material filter on this page to sort by specific fabric types, including Nomex®, Westex UltraSoft®, and DuPont® Nomex®/Kevlar® blends.
Yes — we carry waterproof FR bib overalls designed for workers who face both arc flash or flash fire hazards and wet, outdoor conditions. These garments combine sealed seams or waterproof membranes (such as GORE® PYRAD® or PVC/modacrylic constructions) with certified FR performance.
Many of our waterproof FR bibs from brands like Tingley, NASCO, Neese Industries, and OccuNomix meet NFPA 70E arc flash requirements while also providing 100% liquid protection. Use the Style: Waterproof filter on this page to find rain-rated options. Confirm the individual product's arc rating and FR certifications to ensure they meet your site's specific requirements.
