Flame Resistant (FR) Coveralls - NFPA 70E & NFPA 2112 Certified
Flame resistant coveralls provide full-body arc flash and flash fire protection in a single garment — covering arms, torso, and legs simultaneously, with no exposed gaps between layers. This makes them the preferred choice for workers in oil and gas extraction, petrochemical refining, electrical utility maintenance, pipeline operations, and industrial welding, where full upper and lower body coverage under NFPA 70E or NFPA 2112 is required and a one-piece solution reduces compliance complexity.
FR coveralls in our collection are available in a wide range of arc ratings — from 5.6 cal/cm² (CAT 1) lightweight Nomex® styles for daily wear in low-energy environments, to 9–12 cal/cm² (CAT 2) Indura® and Indura Ultra Soft® cotton twill coveralls for general industrial use, up to 25–34+ cal/cm² (CAT 3–4) insulated styles for high-energy switchgear, substation work, and extreme cold conditions. Most are dual-certified to both NFPA 70E (arc flash) and NFPA 2112 (flash fire), and constructed with Nomex®-taped brass zippers, FR thread, and FR-compliant pockets — every component meets the standard, not just the shell fabric.
Key fabric options include Nomex® IIIA (93% Nomex/5% Kevlar — inherently FR, lightweight, permanent protection), Indura® Ultra Soft® (88% cotton/12% nylon — treated FR, comfortable and durable), and modacrylic/aramid blends for anti-static environments. Styles range from unlined contractor coveralls and deluxe multi-pocket designs to insulated winter coveralls with modacrylic quilted liners for cold-weather field work.
For workers who need combined arc flash protection and jobsite visibility, we carry hi-vis ANSI Class 2 FR coveralls rated to NFPA 70E and NFPA 2112. Use the filters on this page to sort by arc rating, FR standard, fabric, and brand. Key brands include Bulwark, Portwest, Radians Neese, and Ironwear. For lower-body-only coverage, see our FR bib overalls or FR pants.

FR Coveralls — Frequently Asked Questions
FR coveralls provide continuous full-body coverage with no gap between upper and lower body garments — a common vulnerability when FR shirts become untucked during physical work. A single-piece coverall also simplifies compliance management: one garment, one arc rating, one certification to verify. For workers in oil and gas or electrical utility environments where NFPA 70E or NFPA 2112 mandates full-body coverage, coveralls are often the most practical and reliable solution.
Our FR coverall collection spans a broad range of arc ratings:
- 5.6–7 cal/cm² (CAT 1) — Nomex® IIIA lightweight coveralls for low-energy daily wear, lab environments, or tasks with minimal arc flash exposure.
- 8–12 cal/cm² (CAT 2) — The most common range, covering motor control center work, switchboard maintenance, and most general industrial tasks. Includes Indura® and Indura Ultra Soft® cotton coveralls.
- 25–34+ cal/cm² (CAT 3–4) — Insulated and multi-layer options for high-energy switchgear, substation, and medium-voltage applications.
Always confirm the required CAT level through your site's arc flash hazard analysis before selecting a garment.
Nomex® IIIA (typically 93% Nomex/5% Kevlar/2% other) is an inherently FR meta-aramid fabric — flame resistance is built into the fiber and cannot wash out. Nomex coveralls are lightweight, breathable, and deliver permanent protection. They carry a higher upfront cost but are preferred in environments demanding long-term reliability, such as petrochemical, offshore, and utility applications.
Indura® (100% cotton) and Indura Ultra Soft® (88% cotton/12% nylon) are treated FR fabrics — durable cotton twills with a flame-resistant chemical finish. More affordable than Nomex, these are the workhorses of the oilfield and electrical utility industries. Protection remains effective with proper laundering; avoid bleach and fabric softeners. Both carry NFPA 2112 and NFPA 70E certifications.
Yes, FR coveralls are designed with a generous fit to be worn over work clothing. However, NFPA 70E Article 130.7 requires all layers worn under arc-rated coveralls to be non-melting — no polyester, nylon, or synthetic base layers. 100% cotton or FR-treated undergarments are acceptable. For oil and gas flash fire environments (NFPA 2112), note that NFPA 2113 requires full upper and lower body coverage; coveralls satisfy this requirement in a single garment.
Yes. We carry insulated FR coveralls with modacrylic quilted liners for cold-weather field work on substations, pipeline sites, and drilling rigs. These garments are rated to NFPA 70E and NFPA 2112, with arc ratings of 25–34+ cal/cm². The insulation itself is flame-resistant and non-melting, so the stated arc rating applies to the full insulated garment as tested. Use the Style filter on this page to find insulated options.
Most FR coveralls are available in regular and tall lengths, and many offer a "bi-swing" or action back for upper body mobility. When sizing over work clothes, size up one size from your normal measurement. For leg openings, check whether the style has boot-cut legs or snap ankle closures — important if you wear heavy work boots. NFPA 70E recommends loose-fitting FR garments over tight-fitting ones, as air trapped between layers provides additional thermal insulation. Consult the individual product's size chart before ordering.
