Flame Resistant Hoodies & FR Sweatshirts

Both types exist, and the distinction matters for compliance. Flame resistant (FR) garments resist ignition and self-extinguish but do not carry an arc rating — they cannot satisfy an NFPA 70E PPE category requirement on their own. Arc-rated garments have been tested to ASTM F1959 and assigned a specific cal/cm² value (ATPV or EBT), and all arc-rated garments are also FR.

The majority of FR hoodies and sweatshirts in our collection are arc-rated and carry NFPA 70E and/or NFPA 2112 certifications. Always verify the product's arc rating and certification on the individual product page before purchase.

Yes, provided the hoodie's arc rating meets or exceeds the incident energy level for your task and it covers the required body areas per NFPA 70E. Many arc-rated hoodies carry ratings of 8–20 cal/cm², qualifying them for NFPA 70E PPE Category 1 or 2 tasks when worn as an outer layer. NFPA 2113 also requires both upper and lower body coverage, so pair with compliant FR pants or bibs.

NFPA 70E permits layering FR garments to achieve higher combined protection, but only with tested garment combinations — you cannot simply add individual cal/cm² ratings together. A tested assembly rating (where both garments have been tested as a system) is required to claim the combined arc rating. Additionally, every layer under arc-rated outer garments must be non-melting per NFPA 70E Article 130.7. Consult your safety officer and the garment manufacturer for verified system ratings.

Yes. Several hoodies on this page are dual-certified to both NFPA 70E (arc flash) and ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 2 or Class 3 high-visibility standards. These are designed for utility linemen, storm restoration crews, and road construction workers who need arc flash protection and roadway visibility compliance simultaneously.

Common FR sweatshirt fabrics include modacrylic/cotton blends (inherently FR), Protex/FR cotton blends, and FR-treated 100% cotton fleece. Modacrylic-based fabrics offer inherent flame resistance — meaning protection is built into the fiber and will not wash out. Follow the care label on your specific garment. General guidelines: machine wash warm (up to 140°F), use standard detergent, do not use bleach or fabric softeners (both degrade FR performance), and tumble dry low or air dry.
