High Visibility Pants - ANSI Class E Reflective Work Pants for Construction & Roadway Work
Safety Smart Gear carries ANSI/ISEA 107-certified high visibility pants for construction workers, roadway crews, flaggers, utility workers, and anyone requiring lower-body hi vis compliance. Hi vis work pants — also called Class E pants when paired with a Class 3 upper garment — carry reflective tape striping on the legs to meet ANSI/ISEA 107-2015 lower-body visibility requirements.
What is ANSI Class E for pants? ANSI/ISEA 107 Class E designates the standard for lower-body hi vis garments including pants, shorts, and gaiters. Class E pants are intended to be worn with a Class 3 upper garment (jacket, vest, or shirt) to achieve full-body ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R Class 3 compliance — the highest level required for workers near high-speed roadways. Class E pants on their own do not constitute Class 3 compliance without a certified Class 3 upper body garment.
Hi vis work pants in this category include unlined and insulated styles, straight-leg and cargo configurations, and professional-grade workwear options from Portwest, Blaklader, and Tough Duck. Features commonly found in this catalog include multiple cargo pockets, knee pad pockets, hammer loops, reinforced seat and knee areas, and waistband adjustability. Available in ANSI yellow/lime and ANSI orange.
Top brands include Portwest (European-designed workwear with reflective trim), Blaklader (premium craftsman trousers with hi vis striping), and Tough Duck (durable work pants in cotton duck and poly-cotton). Bulk pricing available — request a quote.

High Visibility Pants — Frequently Asked Questions
ANSI Class E ("E" for Enhancement) is the ANSI/ISEA 107 designation used specifically for hi-vis pants, shorts, and bib overalls. Class E is not a standalone visibility class — it is designed to be combined with a Class 2 or Class 3 upper-body garment to achieve a Class 3 combined system. A Class 2 jacket or vest worn together with Class E pants meets the full Class 3 retroreflective tape coverage requirement by adding reflective tape to the lower body. Class E pants are required when Class 3 compliance is mandated and lower-body hi-vis coverage is part of your worksite's safety plan — particularly for workers on high-speed roadways, highway construction projects, and nighttime operations.
It depends on the worksite class requirement and your employer's safety program. ANSI Class 3 is required for high-speed roadways (over 50 mph) and is commonly required on federally funded highway projects under FHWA guidelines. When Class 3 compliance is achieved through a jacket-and-pants system, Class E hi-vis pants are required to complete the Class 3 combination. Many state DOTs and construction project specifications explicitly require lower-body hi-vis coverage including Class E pants for workers in the right-of-way on high-speed roads. Always consult your project specifications and site safety plan to determine whether lower-body hi-vis coverage is required for your specific application.
Hi-vis work pants are constructed from durable woven fabrics suitable for daily job site wear — they provide Class E retroreflective tape coverage as part of a standard work pants garment, comfortable enough for all-day use in construction, utility, and roadway environments. They are not waterproof.
Class E rain pants are made from waterproof or water-resistant materials (typically PVC-coated polyester or similar) and are worn over regular work pants or hi-vis work pants in wet weather. They maintain Class E retroreflective tape requirements on the pant legs. Class E rain pants are designed to be pulled on and off over existing clothing and are a critical component of a Class 3 rain gear system when paired with a Class 3 rain jacket.
Under ANSI/ISEA 107, Class E pants must have a minimum of two horizontal retroreflective tape bands on each leg — one near the ankle and one higher on the leg — with a minimum tape width of 1.375 inches (35mm) and a minimum circumference coverage of 75% around each leg. The tape must be placed to maximize visibility from front, side, and rear. This configuration ensures that lower-body reflectivity is visible from vehicle headlights when workers are in various positions on the roadway. Some garments exceed the minimum tape requirements for added visibility.
No — Class E pants are not a standalone ANSI class. They must be worn in combination with a Class 2 or Class 3 certified upper-body garment to constitute a compliant Class 3 system. Wearing Class E pants with a non-hi-vis shirt or jacket does not achieve ANSI compliance. The upper-body garment and the Class E pants together form the complete system — both must be worn simultaneously for the Class 3 designation to apply. Some worksites require workers to wear both components at all times while in the right-of-way; others may permit Class 3 jacket-only compliance where Class 3 pants are not explicitly required.
Yes — hi-vis pants are available in several construction and fit styles. Standard work pants are straight-leg or slightly tapered woven trousers designed for professional site wear. Zip-off or tearaway styles allow workers to quickly transition between full-length and shorts configurations. Elastic waistband styles pull on over work boots without a zipper fly — common in rain pants and waterproof over-pants. Many hi-vis work pants include multiple cargo pockets, reinforced knees, and gusseted crotches for range of motion. Fit and feature preferences vary by trade — road construction workers, utility crews, and survey teams may have different priorities in work pant construction.
Hi-vis pants are available in the two ANSI/ISEA 107-approved fluorescent colors: fluorescent yellow-green (lime) and fluorescent orange-red (orange). Fluorescent yellow-green is the most common choice and provides the highest daytime contrast against roads, concrete, and asphalt. Fluorescent orange-red provides better contrast against earthtones, vegetation, and natural backgrounds — common for utility and pipeline work in rural environments. For Class 3 system compliance, the pants color does not have to match the upper-body garment, but many crews choose matching colorways for a consistent appearance.
Safety Smart Gear carries hi-vis pants from leading brands including OccuNomix, Kishigo, Portwest, and Utility Pro. Our pants selection includes Class E work pants and Class E rain pants in fluorescent yellow-green and fluorescent orange-red, across a full size range. Class E rain pants are also featured in our Hi-Vis Rain Gear section.
Machine wash hi-vis work pants in warm water with mild detergent. Avoid chlorine bleach and fabric softeners, which degrade fluorescent fabric dyes and retroreflective tape adhesion. Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry. Do not iron directly over retroreflective tape. For Class E rain pants: rinse after use if contaminated with chemicals or oils; hang dry away from direct heat; do not machine wash aggressively as this can degrade waterproof coatings over time — follow the specific care label. Inspect reflective tape on all pants regularly and replace garments with peeling, cracked, or heavily soiled tape that no longer performs to ANSI standard.
