Chemical Splash
Chemical Splash Gear - Tyvek & Tychem Protective Suits
Chemical splash protection is required wherever workers face incidental contact with liquid chemicals, biological contaminants, or hazardous particulates — sanitation and sewer work, mining, water treatment, pressure wash cleaning, agricultural chemical handling, and containment tank cleaning are among the most common applications. The right garment depends on matching the suit's tested barrier performance to your specific chemical exposure, not simply choosing the most protective-looking suit available.
Our chemical splash collection is built around two DuPont fabric families, each suited to different protection levels:
- Tyvek® — a spun-bonded high-density polyethylene fabric that provides excellent protection against dry particulates, dust, and light liquid splash from non-hazardous substances. Tyvek is breathable, lightweight, and the standard choice for general industrial, agricultural, and light-duty cleaning applications where exposure is primarily to dry contaminants or brief, low-hazard liquid contact.
- Tychem® — a higher-performance barrier film laminate designed for liquid chemical splash and, in select styles, more demanding hazards. Tychem fabrics (including the 2000, 4000, 5000, and 6000 series) are tested against specific chemical challenge lists and are appropriate when Tyvek's light liquid splash resistance isn't sufficient for your exposure.
Select garments in this collection are certified to NFPA 1992, the standard for liquid splash-protective suits used in hazardous chemical emergencies — these suits protect against liquid splashes but not against continuous liquid contact, vapors, or gases, and correspond to EPA Level B protection when paired with appropriate respiratory protection. Always review the manufacturer's permeation and penetration resistance data for the specific chemicals in your work environment before selecting a garment — chemical resistance varies significantly between fabric types and even between different Tychem series.
Use the filters on this page to sort by fabric type, garment style (coverall, suit, apron, sleeve), and brand. For disposable gloves and general PPE to pair with chemical splash garments, see our Disposable Garments collection.

Chemical Splash Gear — Frequently Asked Questions
Tyvek® is a spun-bonded polyethylene fabric — breathable, lightweight, and effective against dry particulates and light liquid splash from non-hazardous substances. It's typically used for general industrial work, agricultural applications, and light-duty cleaning. Tychem® is a multi-layer barrier film laminate engineered for resistance to a documented list of specific liquid and sometimes gaseous chemicals, with different series (2000, 4000, 5000, 6000) offering escalating levels of protection against broader chemical challenge lists. Tyvek handles dust and light splash; Tychem is for genuine liquid chemical hazard exposure where the specific chemical has been identified and tested against the suit's permeation data.
NFPA 1992 is the standard for liquid splash-protective suits used in hazardous chemical emergencies. It corresponds to EPA Level B protection — meaning the suit protects against liquid chemical splashes but is not gas-tight and does not protect against continuous liquid contact, chemical vapors, or gases. Wearers accept some exposure to vapors and gases when wearing NFPA 1992-certified gear, since the suit is not designed for fully encapsulated protection. Suits certified to this standard undergo penetration resistance testing and an overall suit water penetration test to confirm full-body splash protection. Using duct tape to seal seams or interfaces does not provide true encapsulation and should not be relied upon as a substitute for a properly rated gas-tight suit (NFPA 1991) when vapor or gas hazards are present.
It depends on the level of contamination and the specific garment. Both Tyvek and Tychem garments can often be reused multiple times if they remain free of tears and have not been significantly contaminated by the chemicals they were exposed to. However, any garment with visible tears, punctures, or heavy chemical contact should be treated as disposable and discarded after use, regardless of the fabric type. The decision to reuse versus dispose ultimately depends on weighing the cost of decontamination and inspection against the cost of replacement — for highly toxic or carcinogenic chemical exposure, single-use disposal is generally the safer and more practical choice.
Manufacturers of NFPA 1991 or 1992-certified suits are required to provide technical data packages including permeation resistance data (chemical name, breakthrough time, and permeation rate) and liquid penetration resistance data, tested according to standardized ASTM methods. Compare your specific chemical against the manufacturer's published chemical resistance chart or technical data sheet before selecting a garment — a suit rated for one chemical is not automatically suitable for another, even within the same general fabric family. If your chemical isn't listed in the manufacturer's data, contact the manufacturer directly or consult a safety professional rather than assuming adequate protection.
Liquid splash-protective suits are often sold incomplete, without integrated gloves and boots, particularly for NFPA 1992-certified styles. If gloves and boots are purchased separately, they must match or exceed the suit's chemical resistance performance for your specific hazard — buying a PVC glove to pair with a PVC splash suit does not automatically mean equivalent protection, since chemical resistance must be compared using the actual permeation and penetration data for each component. Some styles do include attached hoods, integrated booties, and elastic wrist closures to minimize exposure gaps — check the individual product description for what's included before assuming full-body coverage.
