Safety Glasses & Eye Protection - ANSI Z87+ Certified
Eye injuries are among the most common and most preventable workplace injuries — and OSHA requires eye protection (29 CFR 1910.133) wherever workers face hazards from flying particles, dust, chemical splashes, or harmful radiation including UV light. In the U.S., protective eyewear must meet ANSI/ISEA Z87.1, the standard governing impact resistance, optical clarity, and protective coatings for safety eyewear. Look for the "Z87" or "Z87+" marking on both the frame and lens of any safety glasses before use.
The "+" designation is the most important distinction for most industrial buyers: Z87 (basic) indicates the eyewear has passed a basic impact test; Z87+ (high impact) indicates the eyewear has passed both High Mass and High Velocity impact testing — required for environments involving power tools, grinding, cutting, or any risk of high-speed flying debris. For most construction, utility, and industrial environments, Z87+ is the appropriate standard.
Lens material matters as much as the impact rating: polycarbonate lenses are the industry standard — lightweight, highly impact-resistant, and naturally UV-protective, suitable for the vast majority of safety applications. Trivex lenses offer similar impact resistance with superior optical clarity, at a slightly higher cost — often preferred for high-precision tasks. Our collection includes clear, tinted, mirrored, and polarized lens options; anti-fog coatings for humid or temperature-variable environments; bifocal and reader-style safety glasses for workers needing magnification without sacrificing protection; and frames with integrated side shields for full peripheral coverage.
Polarized lenses reduce glare for outdoor work — useful for utility, transportation, and landscaping crews working in direct sunlight — while still maintaining ANSI Z87+ impact certification. For workers who wear prescription eyewear, prescription safety glasses eliminate the discomfort and fogging issues of wearing safety goggles over standard glasses. Use the filters on this page to sort by Z87 rating, lens type, lens color, frame style, and brand.

Safety Glasses & Eye Protection — Frequently Asked Questions
Both markings indicate compliance with ANSI/ISEA Z87.1, but they represent different levels of impact resistance. Z87 (basic impact) means the eyewear has passed a basic drop-ball impact test. Z87+ (high impact) means the eyewear has passed both High Mass (a heavier object dropped from height) and High Velocity (a small projectile fired at speed) impact tests — a significantly more rigorous standard.
For environments involving power tools, grinding, cutting, chipping, or any risk of high-speed flying debris, Z87+ is the appropriate standard. The marking should appear on both the lens and the frame — if either component lacks the Z87+ marking, the complete assembly does not carry the high-impact rating.
Polycarbonate is the industry-standard lens material for safety eyewear — lightweight, highly impact-resistant, and naturally blocks UV radiation. It is the most widely available and economical option that meets Z87+ requirements for the vast majority of industrial applications.
Trivex offers comparable impact resistance to polycarbonate with superior optical clarity (a higher Abbe value, meaning less visual distortion) at a moderately higher cost. Trivex is often recommended for workers performing precision tasks where visual accuracy matters, or for prescription safety glasses where optical quality across the full lens is important. Both materials are suitable for most safety applications; the choice often comes down to budget versus optical preference.
Yes — polarization and ANSI Z87+ certification are independent properties, and quality polarized safety glasses carry both. Polarized lenses use a special filter that blocks horizontally-oriented glare reflected off flat surfaces like pavement, water, or metal — reducing eye strain and improving contrast for outdoor workers. When selecting polarized safety eyewear, verify the Z87+ marking is present on both the lens and frame just as you would for any other safety glasses; polarization alone does not indicate impact protection.
Under ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 and later editions, lenses that pass a standardized anti-fog performance test may carry an "X" marking. This indicates the anti-fog coating is durable and tested to ANSI standards — not just a temporary spray-on treatment. Many safety glasses advertise "anti-fog" features without carrying the X marking, meaning the coating may be less durable or untested to the ANSI standard.
For workers moving between temperature zones (e.g., walking from a cold warehouse into a heated office, or wearing a respirator that traps warm breath near the lens), a permanent anti-fog coating with the X marking provides more reliable, long-lasting fog resistance than temporary treatments.
Both options are available. Prescription safety glasses (Rx safety glasses) are built directly into ANSI Z87.1-rated frames and lenses, eliminating the need to wear bulky over-the-glasses (OTG) safety glasses or goggles over your regular eyewear. Prescription safety glasses must carry the "Z87-2" marking on both the lens and frame to be OSHA-compliant. They offer better comfort for long shifts, eliminate double-lens fogging, and provide full peripheral protection built into the frame design.
OTG (over-the-glasses) safety glasses are designed to fit over standard prescription eyewear and are a lower-cost option for occasional use, though they can be less comfortable for all-day wear and may fog more easily between the two lens layers.
Safety glasses should be replaced immediately if the lenses become pitted, cracked, scratched, or significantly hazed — these defects compromise both visibility and the structural integrity of the impact protection. Most safety professionals recommend a routine inspection every six months even without visible damage, since prolonged UV exposure and chemical contact can degrade lens materials and coatings over time. If your vision prescription changes, prescription safety glasses should be updated promptly to maintain both visual accuracy and safety.
