Windbreakers
Hi-Vis Windbreakers - Lightweight Layering for Mild Conditions
Windbreakers are the lightest-weight outerwear tier in the hi-vis jacket lineup, built from thin polyester shells with minimal or no insulation — the goal is wind and light rain resistance with maximum packability, not warmth. They're the right choice for mild, cool, or transitional weather where a full insulated bomber jacket or parka would be too warm for the activity level, or as a layering piece worn over a sweatshirt or fleece when temperatures drop further. Several styles pack down small enough to stow in a bag or vehicle, useful for workers who need hi-vis protection available on short notice without carrying bulky gear all day.
Most windbreakers here meet ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 3 certification with 2" reflective tape on a lightweight polyester or nylon taffeta shell. Some styles use a convertible multi-piece design (4-in-1 construction) that pairs a removable fleece inner layer with the windbreaker shell, and several are reversible, switching between hi-vis yellow and a more subdued gray or navy panel depending on whether visibility is the priority for a given task. Snap-front closures are common for quick on/off use compared to a full zipper.
The collection includes options from PIP (4-in-1 reversible convertible windbreaker, standard Class 3 windbreaker), OccuNomix (soft shell-windbreaker hybrid and DOR crossover styles), and Portwest (lightweight packable Iona jacket). Use the filters to sort by ANSI class, closure type, and size.

Hi-Vis Windbreakers — Frequently Asked Questions
Windbreakers use a thin, lightweight, non-stretch polyester or nylon shell with minimal to no insulation, prioritizing packability and basic wind/light-rain resistance above all else. Soft shell jackets use a thicker, often stretch-fabric construction (frequently with elastane) that offers better wind and water resistance along with more breathability during active work, generally with more structure and weight than a windbreaker. Windbreakers are the lighter, more packable option for mild conditions or as a thin layering shell; soft shell is the better choice when you need more durable wind and water performance during sustained active work. See Hi-Vis Soft Shell Jackets for the heavier-duty alternative.
A 4-in-1 windbreaker (such as the PIP 333-1500-R) pairs a removable fleece liner with a reversible outer shell, creating four wearable configurations: the windbreaker shell alone in one color, reversed to show the alternate color or gray bottom, the fleece liner worn alone as a separate mid-layer, or the two pieces combined for a fuller insulated jacket. This gives a single garment purchase flexibility across a range of temperatures and visibility needs without requiring multiple separate jackets.
Most windbreakers in this category are designed for wind resistance and light rain or moisture resistance rather than full waterproof protection in sustained or heavy rain. The thin fabric construction that makes them lightweight and packable also means they generally lack the fully sealed seams and heavier PU coating found in dedicated rain gear or bomber-style jackets. For sustained wet-weather protection, a PU-coated waterproof bomber jacket or dedicated rain jacket will perform significantly better than a windbreaker.
Windbreakers suit workers in mild-to-cool weather who need visibility and basic wind protection without the bulk or warmth of a fully insulated jacket — early fall or late spring outdoor work, indoor-outdoor transitions, or as a layering piece over a sweatshirt during cooler mornings that warm up later in the day. They're also a practical option for vehicles or job sites where having a compact, packable hi-vis layer on hand matters more than maximum warmth. For sustained cold or wet conditions, a bomber jacket, parka, or soft shell jacket will provide better protection.
