Hats & Sun Shades for Heat Stress Relief

Prolonged direct sun exposure during outdoor work raises core temperature, accelerates dehydration, and increases long-term skin cancer risk — particularly for workers in construction, road maintenance, landscaping, utilities, and agriculture who spend entire shifts in unshaded environments. Head and face coverage is one of the most accessible and effective first-line controls for managing solar heat load, particularly for workers who are not already wearing a full-brim hard hat. This category covers two distinct product groups: standalone work hats designed to be worn on their own, and sun protection accessories designed to attach to existing hard hats.

Work Hats & Sun Shades — Wide Brim, Cooling & Hard Hat Accessories

Standalone work hats include wide-brim ranger and safari styles that provide 360° circumferential shade coverage — protecting the face, ears, and back of the neck simultaneously. Several styles incorporate evaporative cooling technology: the PIP EZ-Cool® ranger hat line (available in hi-vis yellow, khaki, and camo) uses HyperKewl® inner fabric that activates in 1–2 minutes of water soaking to provide up to 5–10 hours of active cooling while maintaining full brim sun protection. Mesh-crown ventilation styles (such as the PIP 350-RANGER) prioritize airflow and are available in hi-vis yellow for job sites with visibility requirements, and in bulk case quantities (50-unit cases) for crew deployment.

Hard hat sun accessories attach to standard cap-style or full-brim hard hats to extend sun protection to workers who are already required to wear head protection. Hard hat shades and sun shields (OccuNomix 898/899, Kishigo 2810/2813 and 2873/2874) clip, loop, or self-adhere to the rim or brim of existing hard hats, shading the back of the neck and adding full-brim coverage to cap-style hats. Nape protectors (Kishigo 2808/2809) use hook-and-loop tabs to attach inside or outside any hard hat brim. Some hard hat sun accessories also incorporate evaporative cooling elements (PIP 396-EZ810 evaporative cooling neck shade) that both shade and actively cool the neck simultaneously. The Radians NSO neck shade line uses self-extinguishing treated polyester mesh and is available in single units and 50-unit cases for large crews.
