Work Jackets & Coats - Insulated, Soft Shell & Bomber Styles
The right work jacket depends on the climate, the activity level of the job, and how much warmth you need without sacrificing mobility. Our collection covers the full range of outerwear styles and insulation types used across construction, utility, and outdoor trade work.
Work Jackets & Coats — Insulated, Soft Shell & Bomber Styles
Insulation type is the most important factor for warmth-to-weight performance. Down insulation (duck or goose feathers) offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio available — exceptionally warm for its bulk, and long-lasting with proper care, though it loses much of its insulating ability when wet. Synthetic insulation (polyester fill) performs better in wet or humid conditions, retains warmth even when damp, dries faster, and is generally more affordable — a practical choice for job sites where rain or moisture exposure is a regular concern.
Jacket style determines coverage and mobility:
- Bomber Jackets — waist-length, lighter weight, and more about mobility than maximum warmth. Good for moderate cold and active tasks requiring full range of motion, and easy to layer under or wear with a tool belt.
- Parkas — hip-to-thigh length, built for maximum cold-weather coverage and warmth. The added length and typically heavier insulation make parkas the better choice for extreme cold or extended outdoor exposure with less physical movement (e.g., standing watch, traffic control, outdoor monitoring).
- Soft Shell Jackets — lightweight, wind-resistant, and often water-repellent, prioritizing breathability and stretch for mobility over maximum warmth. A strong choice for active work in cool-to-cold (not extreme) conditions where flexibility matters most.
Use the filters on this page to sort by insulation type, style, water resistance, and brand. For flame resistant jackets certified to NFPA 70E and NFPA 2112, see our FR Jackets & Coats collection — standard work jackets do not provide arc flash or flash fire protection. For high-visibility work jackets, see our Hi-Vis Jackets collection.

Work Jackets & Coats — Frequently Asked Questions
Down insulation (the soft under-feathers of ducks or geese) offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio of any common insulation type — maximum warmth with minimal bulk, and it maintains its insulating loft for years with proper care. The major drawback: down loses most of its insulating ability when wet, since the feathers clump together and can't trap air effectively.
Synthetic insulation (polyester fill) is generally heavier for the same warmth level, but it continues to insulate reasonably well even when damp, dries much faster than down, and typically costs less. For job sites where rain or sweat exposure is a regular factor — most outdoor construction and utility work — synthetic insulation is usually the more practical and reliable choice.
It depends on your climate and activity level. Bomber jackets are waist-length and prioritize mobility — a good fit for active tasks in moderate cold where you need full range of motion and easy access to a tool belt. Parkas extend to hip or thigh length with heavier insulation, built for maximum warmth in extreme cold or for tasks with less physical movement, like standing security, traffic control, or extended outdoor monitoring. Soft shell jackets trade maximum warmth for breathability, stretch, and wind/water resistance — ideal for active work in cool-to-cold (not extreme) conditions where flexibility and moisture management matter more than raw insulation.
Most soft shell jackets are water-resistant or water-repellent, not fully waterproof. They're designed to shed light rain, mist, and wind while remaining breathable for active wear — a tradeoff that prioritizes comfort and mobility over total waterproofing. For sustained heavy rain, a dedicated waterproof rain jacket worn as an outer layer is the better choice; see our Industrial Rain Gear collection for fully waterproof options.
If you plan to wear a hoodie, fleece, or thermal base layer underneath, consider sizing up from your standard fit, particularly through the shoulders and chest where bulk from layering adds up quickly. A jacket that fits well with no layers underneath may feel restrictive once you add a mid-layer in cold weather. Check the product's size chart and, where available, any notes about "regular" versus "relaxed" fit — many work jacket brands cut their insulated styles slightly larger than their non-insulated counterparts specifically to accommodate layering.
Always check the care label, as down and synthetic insulation have different requirements. Down jackets typically require a gentle wash cycle with a down-specific detergent, since standard detergent can strip the natural oils that maintain loft; they need to be fully and thoroughly dried (often with dryer balls or clean tennis balls to redistribute clumped down) to restore insulating loft. Synthetic-insulated jackets are generally more forgiving and can typically be machine washed and dried on standard settings, though high heat should still be avoided to protect the outer shell fabric and any water-repellent coatings. For heavily soiled or grease-contaminated jackets, spot cleaning or professional cleaning may be preferable to a full machine wash.
